Love. Is it the same?

"Oh, You Mean Those Immigrants" - Kim Antieau loves her immigrant husband in spite of inheriting a famous "bad" name.

"The True Love Story of a Modern Day Immigrant" - Mira Hall moved to the US from New Zealand to join the love of her life. (En español - Clic)

Come to think of it, what exactly does 'love' mean? Is it a way of behaving? Is it a feeling? How does one know when he or she is in love, or when he or she is at the receiving end of love? What IS a love affair? Is it lust? What is 'ordinary love' and what is 'true love'? Can true love stem from practicality, or does it need to have fireworks?

These are questions that all cultures wrestle with. But not all cultures see them the same. In Italy, a man woos a woman with flowers and songs, and every girl dreams about Prince Charming. In France, Prince Charming is not quite so popular and "Happily ever after" is beginning to disappear. In the US, repairing a girl's car can be a sign of love. Who knows?

Many refugees and immigrants complain that the local culture can not assimilate them as far as love is concerned. The new territory comes with different ways of behaving, of feeling. The 'connection' is not there. Or is it? How is it different? How is it the same?

Disappearance of the Outside: A Manifesto for Escape

by Andrei Codrescu
Taking into account his own exile from Stalinist Romania, as well as the plights of such greats as Garcia Marquez, Breton, Dada, Kundera, and Milosz, Codrescu issues a call for those living in a free society to reach beyond a benign reality founded in technology and commercialism by tapping into their imaginations and striving for a better, evolutionary existence.

FEATURED INTERVIEW:

Sonia Choquette. (first generation born in the USA)
"The first thing to say about the experience of an immigrant is that people are like a tree whose roots have been cut off. Fortunately the human spirit is regenerative but only if you acknowledge that you have suffered a major psychic wound, even if you move under the best of conditions. So you can build new roots."
